[Explained] How to make Facebook safe?

Facebook starts with you, always remember that. You might not have control in the way the company uses your data, considering its immersive advertising, but they sure give you enough ways to keep your data (and yourself) safe. In this blog, I am going to tell about a few ways that I have discovered in the quest of keeping my profile safe.

Accessing the access people have to your data

If you go to your profile, you will find that in the bottom-right corner of your cover picture is the most important tool Facebook has provided you with, to keep a track of the data you share with people. It is to view your profile the way they do. Remember, to know is the first step to be safe. Then comes the step to ensure that safety. Use it!

Log in using your profile picture

This feature needs to be used with caution, especially if you are using a shared computer. Actually, I would never recommend using it all because just for saving like a minute or two, you are making it easier for people to have access to your profile. All they have to do is tap on your profile picture and voila, they have full access! If you are indeed really interested in using this feature, at least choose the one where they ask you to feed in the password for access.

Keep a track and keep it clean

We often login to our accounts through multiple ways. You could be surfing on the Facebook application but had to log in from Chrome to share the article on a certain website through Facebook. Now, this often leads to you being active on Facebook through various mediums, which is not a bad thing but should be avoided. So, every once in a while, just go to the settings and log out of all sessions using this feature.

Know your limitations

Sometimes it becomes important to make certain posts ‘public’, especially if you are taking part in a social media campaign or need to reach out to a bigger audience. However, after a couple of weeks or months, if you feel that its too much information that you have given out in the public domain, Facebook has brought a wonderful option to your fingertips — just one tap or click and all your previous publically share data becomes private again!

Answer the important questions

These are extremely important questions that you absolutely must take out the time to explore and answer to figure out how much data you are making accessible and to whom. Just go and check your security and privacy settings right away!

Facebook might be collecting tonnes of data from you but also gives you options to keep it all safe from your next-door-nosy-neighbour or a miscreant you need to keep away. In essence, when it comes to Facebook and the options of security it gives you, I would like to conclude with Professor Dumbledore’s kind and important words, “Use it well.”
